The Cape Girardeau County Democratic Party Stands for, among other things…

protecting missouri farms

From the corn and wheat farmers of Central and Northern Missouri to the diverse crop production in the Bootheel, Missouri Democrats stand with local Missouri farmers by supporting fair and open agricultural markets, right to local control of land, and providing opportunity for affordable healthcare, good schools, and a path to economic prosperity.

defending unions and prevailing wage

We stick up for working Missourians because we understand that when workers win, Missouri WINS. The Democratic party in Cape Girardeau and all over the state worked hard making phone calls and canvasing to stop Right-to-Work, and we will happily do it again if it comes to that. Moreover, we support using tax dollars to put hardworking Missourians back to work fixing and replacing our outdated infrastructure.

access to affordable healthcare

Healthcare costs continue to soar in the bootheel region while more cuts are made at the federal level to the Affordable Care Act and at the state level to the MO Rx program. We believe that Medicare for All is a sustainable long-term solution. In the meantime, we will fight to return funding to the MO Rx program, to expand Medicaid in MO, and to make sure that ALL pre-existing conditions are covered by your healthcare plan.

civil & human rights for all missourians

We support sustaining the Civil Rights Act at the Federal, State and Local levels and the passage of the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act (MONA) to prohibit denying employment or housing to a person based upon their sexual orientation or gender identity. We also acknowledge the existence of the systemic barriers in place that negatively impact minority groups, and we seek to continually reduce those barriers.

public education and job training

We believe that every child in Missouri should have access to a free, quality, public education regardless of zip code. This includes access to affordable early childcare and pre-K. Furthermore, we believe Missourians should have access to affordable college and career training with a limit on the amount of debt that they can incur.

protecting Missouri’s natural resources

Protecting our environment means making sure that Missourians have access to clean air and water, and that we take advantage of clean sustainable energy to protect these resources for the next generation. It also means that we protect agricultural lands in order to sustain safe and abundant food sources. In the nearby region it also means controlled forest management and clean streams, so that Missouri’s Ozarks continue to be a top regional tourist stop.

upholding voter Protections and rights

We do not support the recent Missouri Voter ID Law because it creates discriminatory barriers to voting that are unlawful. We support legislation that would automate voter registration and enhance the overall voting process, while maintaining the security of our democracy.

Fair and transparent government

We supported Missouri’s Sunshine Law and the passage of Amendment 1 (Clean MO) in 2018, and we continue to fight against legislation designed to undermine the popular vote of statewide initiatives. We also support fair and transparent government, and we reject 2019 HB445, which altered Amendment 1 to exclude legislators from Missouri’s Sunshine Law. Locally, this bill was supported by both Republican Representatives in HD146 and HD147 and allows them to hide their legislative agendas.
